Why Make Sunscreen?
Last summer, I was being my typical self looking up reviews for things on the internet and found what appeared to be one of the top rated sunscreens, Mexitan. I asked my mom if I could order some off the internet so that we could try it out, and she said, "no." However, during all the time that I was researching sunscreen, I spent a good deal of time at looking at their list of ingredients. Since I could not order any sunscreen, I asked my mom if I could order supplies to make sunscreen and she said, "yes." Then I began a search to find the best supplies to make a lotion in the ingredient that I would use as a sun-blocking agent.
The Process Begins
After ordering my supplies off the internet from a variety of locations, it was just a waiting game until the supplies arrived. So while I was waiting, I compiled an exact list of the quantity of each ingredient that I would put in the mixture. When the supplies arrived, I began making the sunscreen.
The Ingredients
- Recipe for Sunscreen – 750g
- 22% Zinc Oxide – 165g
- 8% Bees Wax – 60g
- 1% Soy Lecithin – 7.5g
- 10% Shea Butter – 75g
- 1% Germaben II E – 7.5g
- 10% Grapeseed Oil – 75g
- 5% Fractionated Coconut Oil -- 37.5g
- 43% Distilled Water – 322.5g
End Result
At the end of the process, I had made several batches of sunscreen. 2 of them were purely made by me, and the 3rd one consisted of a brand name lotion combined with zinc oxide. I performed a test on my favorite consistency sunscreen when I was done. I took several name brand sunscreens and did stripe tests to see which one had the best sun protection. My sunscreen came out the best every single time. In addition, all of the ingredients used in my sunscreen were fairly harmless compared to what major companies use.
